XSLT and XSLFO Programming

Today there is no longer any doubt that XSLT and XSLFO belong to the absolute core technologies in any half-way sizeable software project concerned with presenting content for human consumption. Wherever XML data are converted into human-readable documents, regardless if for print, web, or any other medium, these powerful languages play a most integral part.

Unfortunately, however, even today not very many programmers have a full and comprehensive grasp of these languages , at least not beyond a very basic familiarity. Worse, the real power and flexibility of XSLT and XSLFO is still largely unknown and unseen by most programmers who, as most do, only superficially explore these languages and all to often dismiss them as "too static."

Nothing could be further from the truth, though. And while many succeed in creating simple 1:1-transformations, generating a basic HTML document from XML data, the real possibilities and the phantastic potential of the two complex languages--ranging from the development of full-scale, production-quality web sites to revolutionizing book production--remain concealed to most.

Advanced problems--such as merging data from heterogenous XML sources, integrated processing of data streams, graphical data visualizations by means of SVG or Flash, or advanced page layouts in various online and offline formats: all these are problems can only be solved by programmers with our years of professional experience with XSLT and XSLFO.

Not being able to solve XML problems with the right tools, however, leads to exploding costs, project delay, and long-term dilemma with convoluted, unusable code. Experience shows that in nearly all cases such problems are solved by means of technological "detours" and with the help of "tweaking" different technologies that are simply not meant for this purpose. XML problems are best solved with XML technologies, and for many common problems there simply are none better that XSLT and XSLFO.

We have been specializing for many years in these technologies and, unlike most who discuss issues in XML-based publishing and data processing merely from a theoretical angle, we have been continuously involved in concrete projects, developing sophisticated solutions and advanced innovative approaches to using XSLT and XSLFO on the Web, for print, and for multimedia.
